New page

Landscape of meaning questions
This project grows through feedback

This wiki develops the way systemic ideas do — through feedback and circularity, not a fixed final version. If this page helped, confused, or fell short, that's worth knowing. Give feedback →
</blockquote>

Short definition
Landscape of meaning questions are narrative questions that explore what actions, events or unique outcomes say about a person’s values, identity, intentions, relationships and preferred story.

Level
LEVEL 4 — TECHNIQUES AND INTERVENTIONS

Expanded definition
Landscape of meaning questions are used in narrative therapy to move from what happened to what it means.

They are often used after Landscape of action questions.

Landscape of action questions explore the details of an event. Landscape of meaning questions explore the significance of that event.

For example, if a young person describes a moment when they did not let anger take over, landscape of action questions explore what happened step by step.

Landscape of meaning questions then explore what this says about the young person’s values, hopes, skills, identity and preferred way of relating.

These questions help thicken alternative stories and support re-authoring conversations.

Purpose of this technique
The purpose of this technique is to connect lived action with meaning and identity.

It helps people:

* identify values behind actions
* make sense of unique outcomes
* recognise intentions and commitments
* develop preferred identity stories
* notice what their actions say about relationships
* move from behaviour description to meaning-making
* strengthen alternative and preferred stories

When to use this technique
Use landscape of meaning questions when:

* a unique outcome has been identified
* a person has described a meaningful action
* the therapist wants to connect action with identity
* a preferred story is beginning to emerge
* the conversation has enough concrete detail
* the person is ready to reflect on meaning
* re-authoring conversations are developing

How to use this technique
Start with a specific event or action.

Ask what the action says about the person’s values, intentions, hopes, relationships or identity.

Use tentative language.

Do not impose meaning.

Check whether the meaning fits the person’s experience.

The therapist may move back and forth between landscape of action and landscape of meaning.

Example prompts / questions
* What does this say about what matters to you?
* What does this action say about the kind of person you are becoming?
* What do you believe this says about you as a person?
* What do you believe this says about your relationship?
* What were your intentions behind these actions?
* What do you value most about your actions here?
* What, if anything, did you learn or realise from this?
* Does this affect how you see the problem?
* Does this change how you see yourself?
* Does this change how you see your life, your purpose or your future?
* What does this tell us about your hopes?
* What name would you give this direction in your life?

Non-clinical example
A person describes finally asking for help with a difficult task.

The therapist asks what this says about what matters to them.

The person realises it says something about learning to value support, collaboration and not having to manage everything alone.

Clinical example
A parent describes choosing not to shout during a tense moment.

The therapist asks what this says about the parent’s hopes for the relationship.

The parent says it shows they want their child to feel safe enough to speak.

The event becomes part of a preferred story about relational safety and repair.

What this technique can open up
Landscape of meaning questions can open:

* preferred identity stories
* values-based reflection
* re-authoring conversations
* thickening of unique outcomes
* alternative story development
* therapeutic documents
* witnessing practices
* future action planning

Risks, cautions and ethical considerations
These questions can feel too abstract if asked too early.

The therapist should not impose meaning or assume that an action has one obvious meaning.

Some people may need more concrete questions first.

If the person feels confused, return to landscape of action questions and build slowly.

Questions before using this technique
* Has the event been described clearly enough?
* Is the person ready to reflect on meaning?
* Am I about to impose my own interpretation?
* What values may be visible?
* How can I ask this tentatively?
* Should I stay longer with the action before moving to meaning?

Questions during use
* Is the person recognising the meaning as fitting?
* Are values becoming clearer?
* Is the question too abstract?
* Do I need to return to the concrete event?
* Is a preferred identity beginning to appear?
* Is this opening a future direction?

Questions after use
* What meanings became visible?
* Did the person recognise these meanings as their own?
* Did I avoid over-interpreting?
* What preferred story could be developed?
* What future action might grow from this?
* Would a therapeutic document help preserve this meaning?

Landscape of meaning questions should be asked gently.

The therapist is not telling the person what an action means. The therapist is inviting the person to explore what meaning the action may hold for them.
