New page

Dominant discourse
This project grows through feedback

This wiki develops the way systemic ideas do — through feedback and circularity, not a fixed final version. If this page helped, confused, or fell short, that's worth knowing. Give feedback →

Short definition
Dominant discourse refers to the socially and culturally accepted ways of thinking, speaking and understanding that shape how people interpret themselves, others and the world. In Narrative therapy, dominant discourses are recognised as powerful influences that organise identity, relationships and lived experience.

Level
LEVEL 2 — CONCEPTS

Expanded definition
Narrative therapy is grounded in the poststructural philosophy of Michel Foucault, who argued that knowledge and power are inseparable. Rather than treating knowledge as neutral or objective, Foucault proposed that societies develop dominant systems of knowledge — discourses — that determine what is considered true, normal, healthy or acceptable. A discourse is more than language; it's a socially organised way of thinking that shapes perception, behaviour and identity, spanning dominant ideas about mental health, parenting, gender, success, intelligence and family life.

These discourses become so familiar that they're often experienced as objective truths rather than culturally produced understandings. Narrative therapy invites curiosity about them rather than accepting them unquestioningly — a parent who believes they are "failing" may be measuring themselves against unrealistic cultural expectations of perfect parenting, rather than any genuine personal shortfall.

Why this concept matters
Without recognising dominant discourse, therapy risks individualising problems that are largely social, cultural or political — asking not only "what is happening to this person?" but "which ideas about normality, success or identity are influencing this person's story?"

Non-clinical example
A university student repeatedly believes they are "not successful enough" because they compare themselves with peers on social media. Exploring the dominant discourse equating personal worth with productivity and constant self-improvement allows the student to develop a more personally meaningful understanding of success.

Clinical example
A mother referred because of persistent guilt describes herself as "a terrible parent." Rather than accepting this conclusion, the therapist explores dominant cultural expectations surrounding motherhood — beliefs that good mothers should always be available, patient and emotionally resilient — helping the mother separate cultural expectation from her own actual values.

Core insight
Many of the stories people tell about themselves were never entirely their own — understanding dominant discourse creates opportunities to question inherited assumptions and author more preferred ways of living.

Questions before a session
* Which dominant social ideas may be influencing this family?
* Are problems being individualised when they may be socially organised?

Questions during a session
* Where do you think that idea came from?
* Who benefits from people believing this?
* Does this belief fit with your own values?

Questions after a session
* Which dominant discourses became visible?
* Which preferred values emerged?

Rebuilt (August 2026) from a legacy page format that predated the vault's current standard template — removed YAML frontmatter, a duplicate feedback prompt, and excessive section dividers. Two broken links were corrected: "Deconstructive questioning" to the real existing Deconstruction questions, and a reference to a non-existent "Landscape of Identity Questions" technique was removed rather than left broken.
