'''This project grows through feedback'''

This wiki develops the way systemic ideas do — through feedback and circularity, not a fixed final version. If this page helped, confused, or fell short, that's worth knowing. == Short definition ==

Deconstruction is a narrative method for questioning taken-for-granted ideas, labels, assumptions and dominant discourses.

== Level ==

[[LEVEL 3 — METHODS]]

== Expanded definition ==

Deconstruction is used in narrative and poststructuralist practice to examine how meanings are constructed rather than treating them as fixed truths.

It helps people ask where a particular idea came from, who benefits from it, who is disadvantaged by it, and what alternatives may be possible.

In therapy, deconstruction may be used to explore labels such as:

* “attention-seeking”
* “manipulative”
* “resistant”
* “non-compliant”
* “good parent”
* “normal family”
* “successful child”
* “strong person”

The method does not simply argue against these ideas. Instead, it makes their history, power and effects more visible.

Deconstruction is especially useful when families or professionals are caught in narrow descriptions that feel natural or unquestionable.

== Purpose of this method ==

The purpose of this method is to loosen the power of fixed meanings and dominant discourses.

It helps people see that some ideas are socially, culturally and professionally produced rather than simply true.

It can create space for alternative meanings, preferred stories and more ethical descriptions.

== When to use this method ==

Use this method when:

* a label has become powerful
* professional language is narrowing identity
* cultural assumptions are shaping the problem story
* family members feel trapped by expectations
* power or social context needs to be explored
* a dominant discourse is being treated as common sense
* the therapist wants to open space for alternative meanings

== How this method works ==

The therapist gently explores the origin, meaning and effects of an idea or label.

The method asks:

* where the idea came from
* who introduced it
* who repeats it
* what it makes visible
* what it hides
* who benefits from it
* who is harmed or constrained by it
* what other descriptions may be possible

Deconstruction works best when it is curious, respectful and collaborative rather than confrontational.

== Non-clinical example ==

A person says:

“I should be successful by now.”

Deconstruction may explore where this idea of success came from, who defines success in this way, what effect it has on the person, and what alternative meanings of success might fit better with their life and values.

== Clinical example ==

A young person is described as “manipulative”.

A therapist may deconstruct this word by asking what people mean when they use it, when it first appeared, what effect it has on how adults respond, and what other descriptions may also fit.

The conversation might open possibilities such as distress, fear, protest, attachment need, communication difficulty or attempts to regain control.

== Step-by-step process ==

# Identify the dominant idea, label or assumption.
# Ask what the word or idea means to different people.
# Explore when and where the idea first appeared.
# Notice who uses the idea and in what contexts.
# Explore the effects of the idea on identity and relationships.
# Ask what the idea makes visible and what it hides.
# Explore who benefits and who is constrained by the idea.
# Invite alternative descriptions or meanings.
# Connect alternatives to values, context and lived experience.
# Use the new meanings carefully and respectfully.

== Questions before using this method ==

* What idea or label needs deconstructing?
* Is this idea being treated as obvious or natural?
* What power relations support this idea?
* Who benefits from this description?
* Who is constrained or harmed by it?
* How can I question the idea without shaming the person using it?

== Questions during use ==

* What does this word mean to you?
* Where did this idea come from?
* Who first used this description?
* What happens when this word is used?
* What does this description make people notice?
* What does it make harder to see?
* Who benefits when the situation is described in this way?
* What other words might fit better?

== Questions after use ==

* Did I help loosen a fixed meaning?
* Did I avoid turning deconstruction into argument?
* Did I attend to power and context?
* What alternative meanings emerged?
* Did the family recognise these meanings as useful?
* What dominant discourse still needs exploring?
== Notes / source material ==

Deconstruction should be used with humility.

It is not about proving someone wrong. It is about exploring how meanings are made, how they affect people, and whether more dignifying or useful meanings can become available.
